About the Course
The Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS), a five-year programme delivers a comprehensive and holistic education aimed at developing competent, ethical, and compassionate dental professionals. This programme is offered at the MSU main campus at Shah Alam, Selangor.
The curriculum is designed into 2 phases: preclinical (year 1-2) and clinical (year 3-5) to fulfil the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) requirement and to comply to the Malaysian Dental Council standard. It integrates fundamental medical sciences in the clinical training, ensuring students are well-prepared for the challenging real world dental practice.
From the first year, students engage in pre-clinical skills training using state-of-the-art simulation technology. Clinical exposure intensifies throughout the programme, culminating in real patient care under expert supervision in modern dental clinics. The programme places strong emphasis on preventive dentistry, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment of oral diseases, preparing students to promote oral health across diverse communities.
For the elective attachment, depending on the availability at the time of study, students may opt for a placement with dental specialists in public hospitals for specialty exposure, or with private practitioners to gain insight into dental entrepreneurship.
In addition to clinical excellence, the BDS programme cultivates critical thinking, research aptitude, and a lifelong commitment to professional development with emphasis to the interdisciplinary teamwork.

The curriculum has been developed to cater for the needs of the profession with utilization of current technology in teaching and learning. The virtual reality is incorporated in the fundamental and preclinical practice. The use of digital scanner allows student to experience quick and effective storage of dental records for accurate treatment planning.
Students are exposed to various clinical set up range from standard clinical practise in the student polyclinic to the hospital-based training and the participation in community services with other healthcare professionals. It creates competent dental practitioner with strong bonding and friendly ethical and professional relationships amongst peers in managing oral health issues.

The selection for admission to a Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme or equivalent implies selection for the dental profession.
A person who is qualified in Dentistry from a dentistry programme recognized by the Malaysian Dental Council (“Council”) is entitled to be registered by the Council. The fitness to practise Dentistry of the applicant shall be considered in the selection for entry into any dental programme.
The practice of Dentistry requires the highest standards of professional and personal conduct as well as professional competence.
Although some students have attained the academic standards required, they might not be suitable to for a career in Dentistry. This is to safeguard the interest of the public and of the applicant himself. It is better not to gain admission than to subsequently have to leave the course or profession.
It is the responsibility of the dental school to ensure that there are no particular circumstances that will impact upon an applicant’s fitness to practise upon graduation.
All applicants shall declare if they have all the followings which may impact upon their future practice.
i. been found guilty of any criminal offence(s);
ii. serious physical or mental illness; and/or
iii. serious communicable disease(s).
A person with any of the following shall be disqualified from entry into a dental programme;
i. found guilty of offence(s) affecting the human body;
ii. recent or serious dishonesty e.g. cheating in examinations, falsification of documents, plagiarism;
iii. serious physical or mental disorder;
iv. serious communicable disease(s) for which there are no available acceptable methods of protection
Failure to declare information that has a material influence on a student’s fitness to practise may lead to termination of their dental course, as honesty, integrity and good health are essential attributes of a dental practitioner and by extension, the dental student.
In the event of any doubt, the dental school shall seek clarification from the Council.
All decision makers of dental schools and aspiring applicants are advised to study the Council’s guidelines available at www.mdc.gov.my.
A high level of academic attainment is expected.
An understanding of science, in particular chemistry and biology, is central to the understanding of Dentistry. However, the Council recognizes the diversity of subjects taken by applicants and the contributions of those who have entered dental schools with other qualifications.
All applicants shall have attained a level of competence in English to enable them to complete the course successfully.
All applicants entering the dental programme via matriculation, foundation or pre-dental programme, except those with a degree qualification, STPM or A level shall have passed and attained a minimum of the following at School Certificate level or its equivalent:

A combination of SPM and O-Level results is allowed to fulfil the entry requirement as stated in Keputusan Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Induk MQA-SPIPTS Bil.1/2009 bertarikh 11 Mei 2009 and Keputusan Mesyuarat MQA Bil.4/2009 bertarikh 27 Mei 2009 (Kompilasi Dasar Jaminan Kualiti Pendidikan Tinggi 2009–2020: Edisi Ketiga).

For qualifications not listed in this document, the institution must obtain an equivalence assessment from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
Clarifications shall be sought from the Council in situations for which there are no provisions in this guideline.
Graduates from a dental programme who seek employment in the public sector must fulfill the criteria set by the Public Services Commission of Malaysia (SPA).

STUDENT PASS / VISA REQUIREMENTS (INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS)
All international students who plan to study full-time in Malaysia are required to obtain a Student Pass (Student Visa) before starting their studies.
• You must receive an official Offer Letter from the university before applying for a student pass
• The university will submit your Student Pass application through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) on your behalf
• A Visa Approval Letter (VAL / eVAL) is required before travelling to Malaysia
• Studying on a tourist or social visit visa is not permitted
• Your passport must be valid for at least 18 months from your intended intake date
• Visa processing time depends on EMGS and Malaysian Immigration approval
• After arriving in Malaysia, all students must complete a medical check-up at an EMGS-registered clinic
• Your Student Pass will be issued only after medical clearance and document verification
• Continuing students must renew their Student Pass before it expires
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR STUDENT PASS APPLICATION
The following documents are commonly required for all international students:
• Valid passport (clear scanned copy of all pages, including blank pages)
• Passport-size photograph with a white background
• Official Offer Letter from the university
• Academic certificates and transcripts related to your programme
• English language proficiency certificate (IELTS / TOEFL or equivalent), if required
• Proof of acceptance or tuition fee payment (if requested by the university)
• Student Pass / Visa processing fee as determined by EMGS
• Completed EMGS Health Declaration Form (if applicable)
Please note: All documents not originally in English must be submitted together with certified English translations.
ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS (IF APPLICABLE)
Some students may be asked to provide extra documents depending on their situation:
• Release Letter and Visa Cancellation Letter (for students transferring from another institution in Malaysia)
• School Leaving Certificate (for foundation or diploma applicants)
• Sponsorship or Scholarship Letter (if your studies are funded)
• Proof of financial support to cover tuition fees and living expenses
• Statutory Declaration (if there are name differences across documents)
• Resume or Character Reference Letter (commonly required for applicants above 23 years old)
• Police Clearance Certificate (if requested by EMGS or embassy authorities)
• Copy of previous Malaysian visa or Resident Pass (if applicable)
AFTER ARRIVING IN MALAYSIA
Once you arrive in Malaysia, you will need to:
• Complete a medical examination at an EMGS-approved clinic
• Submit your passport for Student Pass endorsement
• Receive a temporary Special Pass (if applicable) while your Student Pass is being processed
• Collect your Student Pass and complete university registration

• Student Pass requirements are set by Malaysian Immigration and EMGS and may vary by nationality
• The university’s International Office will guide you through each step of the process
